With its bright
white walls and majestic black domes, 130-year-old grand mosque is a beautiful
building. This is where hundreds of people displaced from the 2004 tsunami that
flattened entire cities. At the time of the devastating tsunami, slammed into
each building, both old and new. It is a fact that gives great significance to
the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh. The mosque is more than just a
masterpiece of Islamic architecture in Indonesia, because it can survive the
tsunami which is seen by many as a direct intervention of the Creator.
Book kingdom said
that the mosque was first built of wood in 1621 under the leadership of Sultan
Iskandar Muda. Some say the mosque was built even earlier in 1292 by Sultan
Alaidin Mahmudsyah. During the Aceh war in 1873, the mosque was destroyed.
Realize the value and importance to the people of Aceh, 1879, Major General
Vander who served as a military general at the time, to rebuild the mosque as
promised by Governor General Van Lansberge 1877. Two domes were added by the
Dutch in 1936 and two other vaults added by the Indonesian government in 1957.
Baiturrahman Grand
Mosque is located in the center of Banda Aceh. Characterized by a tower as high
as 35 m, 7 big dome and minarets 7, Baiturrahman likely to be an example for
other mosques in Indonesia and Malaysian peninsula; replacing mosques with
multi-layered roof style.
